2014 Outlook: Bye Week Fill-inLast updated on Jun-25-2014 by Rob Warner
Undrafted third-year WR Jarrett Boykin (Virginia Tech) filled in for Randall Cobb and was able to eclipse 80 yards in five separate games. Boykin finished with 49 catches for 681 yards (43 YPG) and three touchdowns and should start the 2014 season as the Packers' No. 3 receiver, keeping him on the fantasy radar (especially in deeper formats and dynasty leagues). However, the draft selections of Davante Adams (Round 2) and Jared Abbrederis (Round 5) are cause for concern. Boykin's ADP has him coming off the board around WR60 as the 150th-best player overall.
Editor's note: Boykin has solid hands and can run above-average routes; however, he is very limited athletically. Someone like Adams could feasibly overtake him by the end of his rookie season. Be careful to not overextend your interest in Boykin.
Green Bay Packers beat writer Tyler Dunne reported via his Twitter feed that wide receiver Jarrett Boykin, who is working through knee and groin issues, missed Tuesday's practice. His status for Thursday night's game with Minnesota is in doubt.
Boykin has only caught two balls for 18 yards on eight targets so far in 2013.Fantasy Analysis:
The best thing for Boykin, his health, and Green Bay's receiving corps would be to sit out Thursday night's game, then take the long break to get his body right before the Packers game with Miami Week 6.
However, that could be the worst thing for his fantasy value. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers obviously has good chemistry with WRs Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb already. While the stats don't reflect it, he's starting to develop that same level of trust with second-round pick Davante Adams. Adams only had two catches for 18 yards on three targets Sunday. Something those numbers don't show is that the target that didn't get to Adams was a red zone target. Adams also had a 34-yard touchdown called back on a holding penalty.
The more time Boykin misses, the bigger the gap gets between the two and the more likely it gets that Adams ends up filling the void left by the departure of James Jones to Oakland. RIght now, Adams is the guy to have between the two. He's not someone to start just yet, but he's on the verge of becoming an extremely relevant part of the Packers potent offense.
