2014 Outlook: Deep-league OnlyLast updated on Jun-25-2014 by Daniel Kalles
Blake Bortles was drafted as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, making him the first QB off the board. Bortles is the quarterback of the future for Jacksonville, but the team has stated that they plan to bring him along slowly (while allowing veteran Chad Henne to start this season). Don't be surprised if Bortles is starting by the end of the season as they look to get him some game-action (something similar to when the NY Giants sat Eli Manning for the first seven games and let the veteran Kurt Warner start). Bortles' only value is in dynasty leagues, deep leagues and start 2QB leagues. Even if he does start at some point during the season, we shouldn't expect much out of him in his first year, as the Jags just don't have enough weapons that are ready to contribute. The future of suspended receiver Justin Blackmon and the development of rookie WRs Allen Robinson and Marqise Lee will help dictate how soon Bortles can be effective. Bortles is being drafted on average as the third QB in Dynasty rookie drafts at the end of the 2nd round.
It was reported Monday that Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles had been diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain after Sunday's game against Baltimore. It's clear now that was obviously false as Bortles will start on a short week tonight versus the Titans. The rookie has thrown 17 interceptions and just 10 touchdowns in 11 starts.Fantasy Analysis:
I'm sure Bortles is injured, so perhaps this will make him think twice about running tonight. But a legit mid-foot sprain is a long-term injury.
Anyway, I'm not sure if Bortles' activation helps anyone in this game tonight. Perhaps Chad Henne would have raised the values of Cecil Shorts, Marqise Lee or Allen Hurns a little more, but let's not act as if Chad Henne is Tom Brady. Really, I'm kind of interested in Toby Gerhart against the Titans' atrocious run defense as a deeper flex play. And if you have Delanie Walker as your starting tight end, he's fine here as well. Otherwise, I want nothing to do with any of the offensive players on either team. No way, no how.
Each defense, however, is somewhat enticing if you are in a bind because of how weak these offenses are. With Bortles and Charlie Whitehurst slinging it, this has the better-than-even chance of being a comedy of errors. If you need a sleeper, I'd lean toward taking the Jags' D at home.
