2016 Outlook: Quality Backup

Last updated on Aug-04-2016 by Shawn Childs

You don't think of WItten as a backup TE, but sure enough, here we are, with Witten off the board as the 18th-20th TE selected on draft day. Witten led the Cowboys in reception (77) in 2015 leading to 713 yards and three TDs on 104 targets. His value is trending downward over the last three seasons (2013 - 111 targets, 2014 - 90 targets, and 2015 - 104 targets) and he'll start 2016 at age 34. In 2014 with Dallas playing at a high level offensively, Jason tied a career low in catches (64) while setting a career low in receiving yards (703) since earning the starting job in 2004. His slight bounce back in value was created by the injury Dez Bryant. Witten has three 1000 yards receiving seasons on his NFL resume plus three years with 90+ catches. He has very good chemistry with Tony Romo while never missing a game in his last 12 seasons. Jason has lost a step for sure, but he still has a high floor even with a declining draft value. Let's shoot for 65 catches for 650 yards with five or so TDs, which is worthy of a low-end TE1 in 12-team PPR leagues.

2016 FFToolbox Mock Draft #1
June 12th, 2016
12.02 Jerry Colvin - Do you remember when the thought of Jason Witten sitting around in round 12 did not exist? Although he is a shell of his former self, if in a pinch for a TE, he will do.
2016 FFToolbox Mock Draft #2
June 27th, 2016
13.09 Gridiron Experts - Jody Smith - Witten remains as consistent as they come. Even with a garbage supporting cast last year in Dallas, Witten had zero drops in the 100+ targets he commanded. He's aging, but still a reliable target for a healthy Tony Romo, and an excellent PPR option in fantasy.
2016 FFToolbox Mock Draft #3
August 10th, 2016
11.05 Cowboys HQ - Matthew Postins - We have to play a tight end. I'm not a fan of that type of system, but those are the rules. I felt fortunate to get Witten here. He's consistent, durable and usually has one of two big games a year. Plus Tony Romo and Dez Bryant are healthy. That should give Witten plenty of open field.
