2014 Outlook: Bust (overvalued)Last updated on Jul-14-2014 by Jeb Gorham
Antonio Gates is over the hill. If you think about him, your knees and ankles hurt on his behalf. At 34 years of age and with Ladarius Green chomping at the bit behind him, Gates should experience a lessened role (although nothing is guaranteed in this game). Gates' production dwindled in the second half of 2013 as the schedule progressed. Despite putting up over 800 receiving yards, Gates scored just four times. The smart money is on Green to overtake Gates; however, there's just no way of knowing how the snaps will be divided between the two.
Tight end Ladarius Green returned to practice for San Diego on Thursday and is likely to play this weekend. He missed the team's Week 15 loss to Denver after suffering a concussion in Week 14 against New England. Green practiced the Friday leading up to last Sunday's game but was unable to clear the concussion protocol prior to kickoff.Fantasy Analysis:
While Green isn't someone you were probably planning to start Saturday against the 49ers, fellow tight end Antonio Gates very well could be. WIth WR Keenan Allen out, Gates could have been in for a big day. It's still possible, but the expected return of Green could cut into his production a little bit.
Green has not lived up to his preseason hype. Many prognosticators thought he would take the No. 1 TE job from Gates and run with it this year. To the dismay of those experts, he has caught just 19 balls for 226 yards. The 34-year-old Gates, on the other hand, has been a top-five fantasy tight end yet again this year.
Gates can be used this week, but downgrade him a smidgen with this news.
