2016 Outlook: Over the Hill (decreased production)

Last updated on Jul-27-2016 by Shawn Childs

Gates has had a Hall of Fame career leading to 844 catches for 10644 yards and 104 TDs on 1269 targets. He started the 2015 season on the DL with a four-game suspension for failing a drug test. Over 11 games, Antonio caught 56 of his 85 targets for 630 yards and five TDs. His success projected over a 16 games schedule would have been 81 catches for 916 yards and seven TDs on 124 targets. His opportunity as far as targets would have been his highest total since 2005. This was created by the injury to Allen and the other WRs. He had three games with double-digit targets (none after Week 10) and six games with six catches or more. Gates will start the season at age 36 so his window could close quickly. In the early draft season, Antonio has an ADP of 131 in 12 team leagues as the 14th TE off the board. At this price point, there isn't a ton of risk and a Fantasy owner can always buy insurance with Hunter Henry. Even with regression, a 60 catch season for 600 yards and some production in TDs seems reasonable. My goal in 2016 would be to find the next Gates at the TE position.

Month Position Franchise/Comments
2016 FFToolbox Mock Draft #1
June 12th, 2016
9.01 Benny Ricciardi - Do I love him? Not really, but I do expect big things from a healthy San Diego offense.
2016 FFToolbox Mock Draft #2
June 27th, 2016
14.03 Scout Fantasy - Armando Marsal - Finished as TE12 in PPR formats last season. Age is obviously a concern, but he continues to prove us wrong. He’s also Rivers’ most trusted target.
2016 FFToolbox Mock Draft #3
August 10th, 2016
10.12 Rotocurve - Michael Rathburn - Gates is pretty much Old Yeller at this point. With the Stevie Johnson injury, Gates will be relied on even more this year, and he is the safety valve for Philip Rivers.
