2014 Outlook: Solid/Safe Pick

Last updated on Jul-04-2014 by Brad Kruse

Fitzgerald has had an excellent career. He has struggled a bit since Kurt Warner retired, but over his last four seasons he has scored: 240, 269, 175 and 237 points in PPR leagues, respectively. Michael Floyd is coming on strong as a second option, although he might overtake Fitzgerald if 11-year vet doesn't step it up. The former Pitt receiver simply doesn't have that Tier 1 or even Tier 2 upside these days. There are likely some wide receivers drafted in the same range as Fitzgerald who could provide more upside, but they come with more risk as well. His ADP (WR16, 41.63) puts him in Round 4, the same round as Victor Cruz, Cordarrelle Patterson, Percy Harvin, Vincent Jackson, Floyd, Michael Crabtree, Andre Johnson and Sammy Watkins. This round runs the full gauntlet from rookie to future Hall of Famer. This feels like one round too early for Fitz. He just isn't the same player he once was where you should reach for him either.

Latest Update

Sep-20-14 Cardinals QB Carson Palmer ruled out; Drew Stanton to start

Still waiting for the nerve in his right shoulder to wake up, Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer has been unable to practice this week and will not start Sunday when the Cardinals face the San Francisco 49ers. Instead, Drew Stanton will get the nod for the second straight week.

Stanton was 14-of-29 for only 167 yards in Week 2 versus the New York Giants. He didn't throw a touchdown or interception

Fantasy Analysis:

It's hard to say at this point what's going on with that shoulder of Carson Palmer's. Reports earlier in the week made it sound like he could play this week -- or never again. It's an issue with a nerve that just needs to "wake up" before he can throw. So, it will be Stanton again.

Stanton has been around the block but is not someone to use in fantasy leagues. His use really hurts the value of WRs Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd. Expect the Cardinals to rely heavily on RB Andre Ellington to try to survive until Palmer is back in the saddle.

4.07 Gridiron Experts - @MikeRigz - Fitzgerald doesn't get enough love. I know all the talk is about Michael Floyd these days, but the better Floyd performs the less double coverage Fitz will face. In other words, the Cardinals are no longer a one-man show and I expect Fitzgerald to have a stronger season in 2014. Fitz's ADP is 4.07, exactly where I took him
