Derek Anderson, QB, Panthers
2014 Outlook: Do Not DraftLast updated on Jun-28-2014 by Mark Morales-Smith
Anderson has only thrown four passes in three years for Carolina. He is a 30-year-old veteran backup. Anderson did somehow manage one Pro Bowl season in 2007 back in Cleveland. That was a bit of a fluke though and those days are long behind him. He was never able to repeat that magical 2007 and has progressively done very little ever since. Even if Newton goes down to injury, Anderson isn't worth a look. He will struggle behind a sub-standard offensive line and the offense brings almost nothing to the table.
Cam Newton is officially on the comeback trail following last week's car accident. Newton practiced Wednesday for the first time since the wreck and split first-team reps with backup Derek Anderson. Newton didn't play in Week 15 due to the two broken bones in his back that were a result of the accident on Dec. 9. The Panthers will host the Browns in Week 16.Fantasy Analysis:
If Newton can manage the inevitable pain in his back and continue to complete limited practices, he will likely start against Cleveland. The Browns have given up the fifth-fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks, and you should expect Newton to keep his number of rushes to a minimum so as to reduce the total of hits absorbed by his still-healing body. Without his rushing upside and with a fairly difficult matchup, Newton is more of a QB2 if he gives it a go.
