2014 Outlook: Solid/Safe PickLast updated on Jun-28-2014 by Mark Morales-Smith
Reggie Bush is coming off a 1,000-plus rushing yard, 500-plus receiving yard season. This is what we've come to expect from him. Bush is a very good fantasy back, but much more valuable in PPR leagues. It is looking like the Lions will be in a dual back system again with Joique Bell, which gelled during the 2013 season. Bush played well as the Lions' feature back, then Bell played well enough to earn a substantial amount of playing time. Expect Bush's numbers to be similar; although he may earn a few less carries while seeing a few more passes to further augment the 54 catches he had last year. His TD numbers will not be high since he is not an adequately-sized option in the red zone. When you have Calvin Johnson and three capable tight ends, undersized running backs don't get all that many looks. Bush is a high-end RB2 in PPR leagues and still has mid-range RB2 value in standard.
Reggie Bush said earlier this week that he would play against the Patriots, but it sounds like he has pushed his ETA back a bit. CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora said Saturday that he's "hearing" Bush will be a "no-go" for Week 12 in New England. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported soon afterward that Bush actually has his eyes set on playing on Thanksgiving versus the Bears.
Bush has been bothered by an ankle injury since Week 5. He practiced in limited fashion throughout this week, but it appears he will miss his fourth of the Lions' last six games.
Not that fantasy owners should be missing Reggie much at this point. He has just one touchdown and one game with more than 70 yards from scrimmage this year. His presence will pretty much wipe out Theo Riddick's fantasy value, but Joique Bell should remain Detroit's top RB. He was impressive in Week 11, gaining 115 total yards against the Cardinals, the team that has permitted the fewest fantasy points per game to running backs this season. He should be deployed as an RB2 in 12-team leagues versus the Patriots.
