2014 Outlook: Do Not DraftLast updated on Jun-23-2014 by Rob Warner
Simpson could face a four-game suspension stemming from a November 9th DUI. The 28-year-old is coming off a career year in yardage after hauling in 48 catches for 726 yards (45 YPG) and two touchdowns. He has just eight career touchdowns over his six year career and has failed to average more than 55 YPG in any season. The pending legal troubles make him irrelevant in 12-team leagues. He'll likely be the Vikings' WR3 running on the outside in a Norv Turner-offense (which is known for taking shots down field, although the real question is do the Vikings have QB capable of making those throws).
49ers general manager Trent Baalke has said his team will not be pressured into drafting a wide receiver early in the draft. He also alluded to the possible emergence of former preseason star Quinton Patton.
"Quinton, in my estimation, is a young player that hasn't gotten an opportunity," Baalke said recently. "Now's his opportunity. Let's see what he can do."
Patton has been a sleeper for two years now. Perhaps this will be the year fantasy owners have been waiting for. He has Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin ahead of him, however, a looming suspension for Jerome Simpson could be the opening Patton needs to propel himself into fantasy relevancy. Look for him to once again be a deep sleeper this season.
