2014 Outlook: Deep-league OnlyLast updated on Jun-26-2014 by Rusty Reeves
The former Louisville receiver should have been the 2013 recipient of the "Make the Most of Your Opportunities" award! Douglas' 85 receptions and 1,067 yards led the team in both categories. At just 6-foot, he lacks the size to be a consistent red zone threat, as evidenced by him only having six TD catches in his five-year career. Unfortunately, with a healthy Julio Jones, Roddy White, and even Steven Jackson back in the mix, Douglas is reduced to a 40-catch, 500-yard guy with would be lucky to score more than one TD. Like last season, he only gains fantasy value if someone is injured ahead of him on the depth chart.
The Falcons continued to cut salary on the offensive side of the ball by letting go of wide receiver Harry Douglas on Friday. Douglas, 30, is one season removed from an 85-catch, 1,000-yard campaign. However, those numbers dropped to 51 and 556, respectively, this past season. Douglas also missed a month of action due to a foot injury. His release saves Atlanta $3.5 million and comes one day after the team cut running back Steven Jackson.Fantasy Analysis:
Although he will turn 31 in September, I'm kind of intrigued to see where Douglas plays next. In 2013, when Julio Jones and Roddy White were injured, he proved that he could produce as an offense's No. 1 wideout. During the three games when Julio and Roddy were both inactive, Douglas caught 22 passes for 352 yards. In Week 13 of this season, while White was nursing a sore ankle, Douglas gained 116 yards on nine receptions versus the Cardinals. Two weeks later, as Jones was absent due to a bad hip, Douglas provided 131 yards on 10 receptions against the Steelers.
He'll never be a huge source of touchdowns -- he's 6 feet tall and has tallied eight receiving TDs in six years -- but Douglas is a quality backup who could have fantasy value if those in front of him fall. All he needs is an injury to occur. And a good quarterback. And a pass-first playcaller. But he shouldn't be unemployed for long.
I doubt the Falcons will happily move forward with Devin Hester as their No. 3 WR. They will make an addition via the free-agent market and/or the draft.
