2014 Outlook: Sleeper (undervalued)Last updated on Jul-08-2014 by Daniel Kalles
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR: Toby Gerhart signed a three-year contract worth $10.5 million and was anointed the starter. The Jags have been saying he will get anywhere from 15 to 20 touches per game and be an every-down back. Despite that, I wouldn't expect too much from Gerhart as the Jacksonville offense is pitiful and not much improved over last season when they were the second-worst rushing team in the NFL (rushed for only 1,260 yards). While Gerhart might help improve this, don't expect a major transformation. The former Stanford back is an adequate option, but would be best served putting up weak stats for another fantasy team. Gerhart is being drafted as RB24, but we prefer other players that are being drafted later -- namely Rashad Jennings, Pierre Thomas and Joique Bell.
Unlike with Teddy Bridgewater in Minnesota, the Jaguars didn't wait for an injury to get their first-round quarterback on the field; they had just seen enough of Chad Henne. After a 33-yard first half, Henne was benched in favor of No. 3 overall pick Blake Bortles.
Bortles entered the game against the Colts with the Jags trailing, 30-0. He played the entire second half and completed 14 of 24 passes for 223 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed a couple of times for 30 yards. After the game, head coach Gus Bradley announced that Bortles is now the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the season.
That line looks pretty good for a rookie's first-ever half, but it's hard to judge Bortles' performance in a game that was so out of hand, against a defense that was playing loose. But hey, his two TDs were one more than the Jags scored with Henne in the previous nine quarters. Bortles has been drawing nearly non-stop praise from his coaches since training camp opened. Their initial plan was to have him "redshirt" this season, but Henne is not even a decent starting quarterback and was unable to keep the coaches from making a move. So, the future begins in Jacksonville. The 6-foot-5 and mobile Bortles shouldn't be owned outside of two-quarterback leagues, but at least he gives this entire offense more hope and potential than it ever had with Henne. Bortles' first start will be an especially tough task: Sunday versus the Chargers in San Diego.
