BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR: Toby Gerhart signed a three-year contract worth $10.5 million and was anointed the starter. The Jags have been saying he will get anywhere from 15 to 20 touches per game and be an every-down back. Despite that, I wouldn't expect too much from Gerhart as the Jacksonville offense is pitiful and not much improved over last season when they were the second-worst rushing team in the NFL (rushed for only 1,260 yards). While Gerhart might help improve this, don't expect a major transformation. The former Stanford back is an adequate option, but would be best served putting up weak stats for another fantasy team. Gerhart is being drafted as RB24, but we prefer other players that are being drafted later -- namely Rashad Jennings, Pierre Thomas and Joique Bell.
With RB Toby Gerhart still sidelined, Jacksonville's much-maligned running game got a huge effort from RB Denard Robinson in Week 7, as the Jaguars got their first win of the season in a lop-sided 24-6 home win over the Cleveland Browns. On the day, Robinson ran for 127 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. In true Michigan fashion, the former Wolverine didn't pass on the opportunity to take a jab at his college rival Buckeyes. When asked about his career day, Robinson joked, "Good to do it against an Ohio team."
Prior to Sunday, Robinson had run for 94 yards on 28 carries in 2014. The 1-6 Jags will host the 3-3 Miami Dolphins in a Sunshine State Showdown in Week 8.
Robinson should be the guy to get the opportunity to be the lead back for Jacksonville. After Sunday's effort, he is the only back for the Jags who's averaging over four yards per carry (4.42). The guy who was supposed to be their bell cow, Gerhart, is averaging a pedestrian 2.4 yards per carry.
For fantasy purposes, the Jags' backfield isn't a bed we'd advise jumping into, but if you have to use one of them as a bye week filler, or injury coverage, Robinson would be the guy. If he can put together another effort like Sunday's game, he could start to enter the flex conversation on a weekly basis.
